So last weekend the love muffin and I decided to partake in an old North Shore ritual – eating fried clams. Saturday evening I ventured up to Ipswich (after beers with kteb in the afternoon, which were mighty tasty might I add) to visit the time tested, Clam Box. The Clam Box in Ipswich is right on Route 1A and has been in business serving fried seafood for over 60 years. That’s right folks, like been in business longer than my parents have been alive!
There’s a good reason for it too. You could tell when we showed up on a rainy Saturday night and the line was out the door. When we finally got up to the counter to order a surly teen took our order – the fried clam plate. I thought I was ready for the deliciousness that was about to hit my palate, but I had NO idea how good it would really be.
The plate was literally STACKED with fried clams. It came with equally delicious onion rings and cole slaw, which we ate with our fingers, like animals. I highly recommend any of the fried clam spots on the N.Shore but this one is a new fav. The clams were sweet and went down without a fight. The hard part was finishing the plate – and you know, I’m no slouch at eating, especially fried food. This plate was definitely big enough to share.
Served best with a Summer Ale (see previous beer posting).
Clam on clams!
